Meet Our Doctors

Dr. Daniel C. Walters, Jr.

Dr. Walters was raised in Fairmont, NC, where he graduated from Fairmont High School. Dr. Walters attended UNC-Chapel Hill, where he attained his undergraduate degree in biology with a minor in chemistry. He earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery from The University of North Carolina School of Dentistry.

Upon graduation, Dr. Walters opened his dental practice in Lumberton, NC. With the assistance of Dr. Tom Cleveland, he was able to associate and eventually own his practice.

Dr. Steven E. Smith

Dr. Smith was raised in Lumberton, NC, where he graduated from Lumberton Senior High School. He attained his undergraduate degree in Biological Science from NC State University. Dr. Smith earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from The University of North Carolina School Of Dentistry.

Upon graduation, Dr. Smith worked in Winston Salem, NC, before he and his wife Katie returned to their hometown of Lumberton. Dr. Smith joined our practice in 2014.

Meet Our Dental Hygienists

Shauna Locklear Cain, RDH

I’ve had the pleasure of working in the dental profession since 2003 and have been with Walters & Smith Family Dentistry since 2007. I completed my degree at Fayetteville Technical Community College, where the degree I obtained prepared me with knowledge and skills to provide dental hygiene care to patients and the community. Sharing my passion for oral health, beautiful smiles, and building trust with each patient is something that I take pride in here at Walters & Smith Family Dentistry.

I enjoy traveling with family and friends during my spare time, spending time with my husband and our three playful dogs, which we love very much.

Susan Hedgpeth, RDH

I graduated from FTCC in 1983, where I received my associate of applied sciences degree. Upon passing my state and national boards, I received my license in dental hygiene. I started working for Dr. Thomas H. Cleveland in 1983 and continued working for him for 25 years.

When Dr. Daniel Walters bought the practice in 2008, I was fortunate to continue to work in this practice. I feel so blessed to work with dentists who feel like brothers, staff who feel like sisters and have patients who feel like family. I enjoy spending time with my family, photography, crochet, camping and hiking in my free time.

Crystal Lewis, RDH

After high school, I received an associate’s degree from Bladen Community College and then furthered my education with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology at UNC Wilmington. After taking a few years off, I returned to dental hygiene at Fayetteville Technical Community College and graduated in 2008. I have had the honor and privilege of working with Dr. Walters since 2008 and the pleasure of working with Dr. Smith since he joined our practice.

I thoroughly enjoy my job and love the people I work with. I also enjoy spending time with my family and friends when I am not at work. I am a native of Bladen County and currently reside there with my husband and two sons. I can’t wait to meet you and have the pleasure of enhancing your smile.

Alyssa Warren, RDH

I had the opportunity to shadow Dr. Walters in my last years of high school which helped me tremendously when I began the hygiene program at Fayetteville Technical Community College. I graduated in 2019 and began working with Dr. Walters and Dr. Smith. I was very grateful to be welcomed back by such a wonderful work-family.

I love being able to get to know each one of my patients. I take pride in developing relationships and making smiles brighter each day. In my spare time I love spending time with my family, traveling, and shopping.
